How Long Can You Leave Laundry In The Washing Machine?

As suppliers and fitters of high-quality symphony kitchens, we meet a lot of people. We take the time to get to know our customers so we can help them create their dream kitchen. This can lead to some more unusual questions. One of the more unusual questions we are often asked is how long you can lave laundry in the washing machine. That’s what we look at in this blog post.

It is a question we are frequently asked our kitchen cabinets can leave a washing machine out of sight. For many homeowners this can result in a case of out of sight and out of mind. This is why we are often asked how long you can leave laundry in a washing machine.

Ideally, you should remove laundry from the washing machine as soon as the cycle is complete. This DOES NOT matter which brand of appliance it is, it still the same message.

Otherwise, the following will happen:

  • Mildew and Mold Growth: This is the most common and noticeable issue.
  • Wrinkles: Clothes left sitting in a crumpled, damp pile will develop more wrinkles, making them harder to iron and potentially requiring an extra drying cycle to smooth them out.
  • Fading and Damage: While less common than mildew, prolonged dampness can potentially contribute to dyes bleeding or even weaken fabric fibres over time, especially if the clothes are left for days.
  • Stagnant Odor in the Machine: The washing machine itself can start to develop a musty odour if wet laundry is left inside frequently, requiring you to clean the machine more often – Although this is not stated to invalidate your warranty, some suppliers are funny with this!

Here at PPM Interiors in Peterborough, we always say to transfer your laundry to the dryer or clothesline promptly after the wash cycle ends.

If you forget for a couple of hours, it’s usually not a big deal. But anything longer (especially overnight or for a full day) increases the risk of mildew and unpleasant smells. If your clothes do smell musty, re-washing them is usually the best solution.
